Take your own Health Check

Your Height
is how tall you stand. It is determined by your genes but is greatly influenced by your health and nutrition whilst growing. You are tallest when you rise in the morning, and gradually shrink during the day and with age.

Your Weight
Is primarily determined by your activity and diet. Weight gain is due to eating more than you use up and weight loss occurs when you eat less than you burn off.

Your Body Mass Index (BMI)
is the relationship between your height and weight, and calculates whether you are the right weight for you height. BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. A score below 20 indicates you may be underweight – it could be you have a small frame and are perfectly healthy at this weight, but you should not lose weight. 20-25 is an ideal score. 25-30 is overweight – if you are very muscular you may fall into this category and it is of no concern; if muscle is not the case you should try to lose weight. 30+ is defined as clinically obese. Your risks of disease are markedly increased at this weight and you should lose weight immediately.

Ideal percentages: 16-21% (male), 19-26% (female)
This is your percentage of body fat in relation to your total body weight. If you have 20% body fat, 20% of your weight is made up of fat. Body fat is essential, but only up to a certain level. Above the recommended level, the risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes increase. Body fat is determined by your activity and diet.
Your waist measurement is taken at the widest part of your waist, one inch above your navel (belly button). If it is large and is where you carry body fat it puts you at a greater risk of heart disease and diabetes.
Your Height/Waist Ratio looks at how your height relates to your waist measurement. If the ratio is outside the recommended range there is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
Your Blood Pressure is the pressure of the blood as it is pumped from your heart into your arteries. The top number is when the heart contracts and forces blood out, the bottom number is when the heart is relaxing and there is little blood flow. Pressure increases when the vessels are narrowed (like a hose pipe) possibly due to stress and other hormonal changes and by fatty deposits being laid down on the arterial walls. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.
