Race The Sun - Saturday 6 September 2008

Race the Sun is an unique event in the Lake District.

Teams of 4 must complete cycling, climbing and canoeing sections of the event starting at sunrise and finishing by sunset – racing the sun!

Those taking part cycle a total of 50 miles, hike to the summit of England’s second highest mountain — Helvellyn— and canoe a 5km course on Lake Thirlmere.

Canoe experience is not essential as rafted (roped together)Canadian canoes are used. It’sthe teamwork that counts.

To take part you need to pay a registration fee of £175 per team and pledge to raise a minimum of £1800 in sponsorship for Action Medical Research.

The Challenge

This is the sixth year of this exciting triathlon-style challenge event. Teams of four will be attempting to complete cycling, climbing and canoeing sections of the challenge starting at sunrise (06:28 hours approx.) and finishing before sunset (19:50 hours approx.) – racing the sun! Team Hampton will cycle a total of approximately 50 miles (80kms), hike to the summit of England’s second highest mountain - Helvellyn at 3,116ft (950m) - and canoe a 2-mile (3kms) course on Thirlmere Lake.

From the start point in Penrith, Cumbria there will be a staggered start for the first leg of the cycle route (approximately 22 miles). The way-marked and marshalled route will take us to the foot of Helvellyn where we will leave our bikes with the support team and head off on foot to the summit – a vertical height gain of over 2,500 ft from the start point. Then it’s back down to the start point to retrieve bikes and set off for the shores of Thirlmere some 2 miles away to tackle the canoe section of the challenge.

Once the water section has been accomplished it’s back on the bikes for a final dash back to Penrith (a ride of approximately 26 miles).
